Authenticity Drives Connection

Authenticity over consistency.

In the world of social media, I often preach consistency. But last week, I hit a wall. Between client work, kaupapa-driven mahi aroha, looming deadlines, and hui upon hui—I was overwhelmed. And then came the dreaded writer’s block.

I tried to push through. I even started a half-hearted blog about someone else’s project—an underwhelming tale in community journalism. It felt flat. Worse, it was edging toward being preachy and judgmental—exactly the kind of tone I don’t want associated with Tū Mai Te Toki.

This business is about authenticity, transparency, growth—and most importantly, connection.

So instead, I’m sharing something real: I’ve joined a new kaupapa focused on wild animal management. It's early days—“watch this space” is the current catchcry—but I’m excited to be part of both the Communications Subgroup and the Māori Subgroup supporting this work.

The Department of Conservation and Ngā Whenua Rāhui are helping guide these spaces, and I was invited in by my friend Mel Mark-Shadbolt, CE of the Māori Biosecurity Network, Te Tira Whakamātaki. I first met Mel in the Predator Free space—a kaupapa that shifted my worldview.

These experiences have helped me reframe what it means to be a watchful one as a kaitiaki. I’m not a hunter, nor a gatherer. I’m not a gardener. But I am a storyteller. And when the species nerds—my favourite kind of people—share the magic of nature, I want to help amplify it.

That’s what I’m building through Tū Mai Te Toki: a way to spread more of that magic through powerful, values-based storytelling.
